Bungawitta Early Learning Centre is located in Newnham, with convenient proximity to the TasTafe Alanvale campus. Bungawitta was established in 1986 to meet the education and care needs of the families who lived and worked in the local community. Our proximity to the University, Maritime College and TAFE means that our families live throughout the greater Launceston area.
The building created quite a stir in 1986 because of its unique child-focused design. The original architect, Robert Morris-Nunn, was the recipient of a major architectural award at the time and has been engaged to help with a redevelopment and modernisation of the building – maintaining rich connections with the history of the service while ensuring it meets the needs of children and the community today.
The name 'Bungawitta' is an Aboriginal word meaning 'home of the possum'. This namesake connects the service with the traditional owners and custodians of the Land, helping to encourage a community rich in culture, history and diversity.
Our service is a lunch box service and provides nutritional morning tea and afternoon tea. Our menu is designed to take into account children’s likes and dislikes, special dietary requirements and the Australian Dietary and Infant Feeding Guidelines.
Bungawitta Early Learning Centre is a Move Well Eat Well accredited service.
Bungawitta Early Learning Centre has a dedicated service bus that enables a daily home and school pick up and drop off service. If you require assistance with transport, please speak with the Director.
Discovery Early Learning Centres is accredited with the Tasmanian Department of Transportation as a public passenger vehicle service.
The Discovery bus enables regular opportunities to go on excursions and strengthen links with the local community. These excursions expose children to a range of different experiences and enable them to further connect with their community. Children also have the opportunity to enjoy regular walking excursions to a variety of locations.
Bungawitta has a special relationship with the TasTafe Alanvale campus, regularly visiting and participating in their playgroup sessions.

Laura is originally from Melbourne and moved to Tasmania to complete her Bachelor of Education. She has now worked at Bungawitta for the last 10 years, starting off as an educator, to Assistant Director, Co-Director and now Director. She has enjoyed creating relationships with the families at Bungawitta, while educating and supporting the children - having fun together and sharing joy. Laura is a mother, which is a role that has strengthened and challenged her but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
